There was reason to rejoice at the “Community of Sant Egidio” hospital in Bissau the other night. It was a surprise party as little S. was born a few days early.

For a year, the DREAM programme has enabled the treatment of men, women and children afflicted with tuberculosis who are admitted to the hospital. The mother of S. was the first pregnant woman to be enrolled on the DREAM programme and she happened to be in hospital to help her other daughter, a patient in the Arco-Irisi paediatric department.

After initial amazement and a dash to the national hospital – where there is the only maternity clinic in the country – for a quick check-up, mother and baby girl returned to their room at the “Community of Sant Egidio” hospital, where they were welcomed by nurses, doctors, mother and children who held a big party!

There is new hope for so many women: being able to breastfeed their babies, and to watch them grow up healthy, without AIDS.
