The Italian Foreign Affairs Minister, Massimo D’Alema, during a visit to Mozambique, went to one of the centres of the DREAM programme in the city of Maputo. The centre – created for the treatment of HIV-positive children and pregnant women affected by HIV – is equipped with a molecular biology laboratory that is capable of carrying out not only the monitoring of children on treatment but also research about possible drug resistances.

The Minister was welcomed by a delegation of the Community of Sant’Egidio, which is working on site for the development of the programme, and by a large group of infected women and children who greeted him warmly.

Later, he stopped awhile to talk to the Mozambican socio-health personnel of the centre, who showed him the organisation of activities and the specific nature of the treatment of HIV-positive children, especially of orphans.

At the end of his visit, the Minister congratulated the Community of Sant’Egidio for its considerable commitment to Africa and he pledged to support the DREAM programme in the future.
