Central African Republic: a physiotherapy mission in Bangui strengthens the activities of the DREAM Program
At the Clinique and the DREAM Pavilion of the University Hospital of Bangui, a new physiotherapy mission is underway, reinforcing the commitment of the DREAM Program to the care of the most vulnerable people in the Central African Republic.
A team composed of four third-year physiotherapy students from the University of Eastern Piedmont, accompanied by the program coordinator, is carrying out clinical and training activities in the health centers supported by the DREAM Program of the Community of Sant’Egidio. This is the fourth mission carried out within the framework of this collaboration, which began in 2022.
During the mission, the team is involved in the assessment and rehabilitation of children and adults with motor impairments, conditions often linked to neurological damage at birth or neurological diseases. Physiotherapy activities are part of the broader patient care pathway provided by the DREAM Program.
A key aspect of the mission is also the involvement of caregivers, the family members who assist patients on a daily basis. During the sessions, practical guidance is shared to support and stimulate the motor abilities of people with disabilities, making it possible to continue rehabilitation exercises at home.
The mission also includes training sessions on disability for DREAM center staff, focusing on clinical classifications, ethical aspects of care, and approaches to patients and their families. The aim is to further strengthen the capacity of health services to respond to the needs of people with disabilities.
This initiative is part of the broader commitment of the DREAM Program of the Community of Sant’Egidio to strengthening health services in the country. On February 1, 2026, the project “Health and Peace: ensuring equitable access to primary healthcare for the most vulnerable” began. The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and aims to improve access to integrated and inclusive health services for women, children, and people with chronic diseases in the city of Bangui.
