With the support of the Korea Senior Welfare Foundation

The Community of Sant’Egidio has been present in Africa since the 1980s through peace initiatives, mediation, and development cooperation. Over time, this presence has taken shape through structured programs, particularly DREAM for health and BRAVO! for birth registration, with the goal of promoting social inclusion, fundamental rights, and the building of more just societies.

The DREAM Program (Drug Resource Enhancement against AIDS and Malnutrition) is a concrete and integrated response to the fight against HIV/AIDS on the African continent. Active in 10 countries, DREAM provides free, high-quality healthcare and promotes a new culture of health based on universal access, therapeutic innovation, and respect for human dignity.

Through a network of health centers, DREAM ensures effective antiretroviral treatment, advanced diagnostic services, nutritional support, and psychosocial care. Particular attention is given to the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), thanks to which over 99% of babies born to HIV-positive mothers followed by the program are born free of the virus. The program also invests in training local healthcare workers, contributing to the strengthening of national health systems.

Alongside DREAM, the Community of Sant’Egidio launched the BRAVO! Program (Birth Registration for All Versus Oblivion), to address another major challenge: ensuring every child’s right to legal identity through birth registration. Today, millions of children around the world grow up without any document certifying their existence — in sub-Saharan Africa, over 56% of children are unregistered.

Without a birth certificate, children are more vulnerable to human trafficking, labor and sexual exploitation, and exclusion from education and healthcare. BRAVO! works to strengthen civil registration systems in the countries where it operates, through the training of civil registry officers, raising awareness among families, and promoting universal registration, even in rural areas and maternal and child health centers.

The support of the Korea Senior Welfare Foundation has played a vital role in making these interventions possible. Thanks to its generosity, both DREAM and BRAVO! have been able to expand their activities, improving access to healthcare and civil registration for thousands of children and families in vulnerable settings.

Among the many people reached by these programs, the story of Irene, a young mother from Malawi, offers a tangible example of their impact.
In 2008, Irene discovered she was HIV-positive. She was alone, in very poor health. A neighbor advised her to visit a DREAM center. There, she received medical care, began antiretroviral treatment, and over time regained her strength, resumed work, and rebuilt her life. In the years that followed, she experienced two pregnancies — both monitored through the program, and both resulting in the birth of healthy children.

Today, Irene is in good health and continues to bear witness to the value of accessible healthcare and compassionate, competent support.

We sincerely thank the Korea Senior Welfare Foundation for its concrete support and for sharing our commitment to a future where health, identity, and human rights are guaranteed for all.
