Health and Environment: Solar Power System Activated at the DREAM Center in Blantyre, Malawi
The Social Purpose For Solar Revamping project by ERG, initiated two years ago, was born from the idea of repurposing high-quality solar panels with excellent performance to help Sant’Egidio provide stable, clean, and low-cost energy to the healthcare facilities of the DREAM program.
What do a major Italian energy group, a logistics giant, two leading suppliers of electrical and electronic materials, a global leader in technical and sports glove production, and Sant’Egidio have in common? A shared responsibility for the world’s future and a desire to support Malawi.
Launched two years ago and officially presented at Key Energy in Rimini earlier this year, ERG’s Social Purpose For Solar Revamping project focuses on reusing premium-quality solar panels to supply clean energy to the DREAM program’s healthcare facilities. The initiative began with the Alumando DREAM Center in Blantyre, Malawi.
Over the course of the project, valuable collaborations were forged: MSC Foundation transported all the materials to Malawi; Eletec2000 designed the system; Comoli Ferrari and Uflex contributed materials and technical expertise; and Dal Dosso Gloves funded the solar installation in Blantyre.
The project wasn’t a simple funding effort—it was a journey that addressed every aspect, from design to the installation of the solar system in Malawi. The diverse stakeholders, from entirely different sectors and experiences, came together to share ideas, resolve challenges, and work collaboratively. This required tenacity and patience from all involved. Businesses dedicated time to understanding Sant’Egidio’s needs, while the organization adapted to new technical and operational concepts, resulting in mutual enrichment.
After two years of work, the fruits of these efforts are now visible. Today, on World Environment Day, the solar power system at the DREAM Center in Blantyre—the largest Sant’Egidio healthcare center in Malawi—has been officially activated. More than 200 solar panels are now powering clinical activities and the diagnostic laboratory. This happy coincidence of timing was unplanned; the installation was delayed by a couple of months due to instability in the Red Sea, which forced shipping routes to take a longer detour around Africa.
A heartfelt thanks to all the partners, particularly ERG, which donated the solar panels and funded most of the project. Special thanks also go to the local technicians in Malawi, who, despite having no prior expertise, tackled the challenging installation with dedication and diligence. Over the 40 days of intensive work, they acquired significant skills and are now capable of maintaining and managing the complex system.
In the face of Malawi’s severe economic crisis, marked by rising costs of living and inflation, this solar installation will provide essential support for the growth and sustainability of Sant’Egidio’s healthcare services while respecting the nation’s beautiful natural environment.
