On August 7, the first edition of the training course on differentiated health services, organized by the DREAM Program of the Community of Sant’Egidio as part of the “E.Qu.A.S. Equity, Quality, Access to Health – AID 012596/02/3” project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, concluded. The three-day in-person course was held in Maputo, with remote connections to Beira and Quelimane.

According to Mozambique’s national guidelines (Modelos Diferenciados De Serviços Para o HIV/Sida Em Moçambique 2023, MISAU), it has recently become clear that maintaining the same models of care for all patients, regardless of their specific needs, is ineffective and can cause unnecessary harm to both patients and the National Health Service. In this context, the implementation of Differentiated Service Models (MDS) is crucial to make HIV identification activities more effective, simplify and tailor patient management, and meet the expectations of various groups.

In this light, the primary goal of this training was to enhance the effectiveness of local healthcare services by promoting the development of more specific and inclusive care models. This new approach focuses on holistic patient care, considering factors such as gender, geographical origin, social class, age, and health status to better address the needs of each individual.

The first edition of the course concluded on August 7, with additional sessions scheduled for August 12-14 and August 21-23. In total, approximately 140 health professionals will be reached, including medical technicians, pharmacists, nurses, doctors, and activists, from the 7 centers selected for the project activities (Beira Polivalente, Manga Chingussura, Centro Para Criança, Zimpeto, Matola II, Machava, and Quelimane).

This marks a significant step toward a more equitable and quality healthcare system, capable of addressing the specific needs of young people and adolescents. The differentiated approach not only improves the effectiveness of care but also fosters an environment of respect and dignity for beneficiaries, ensuring that each individual receives the necessary attention and support for their well-being.

The ongoing commitment of the Community of Sant’Egidio will be crucial in continuing to develop and implement these models, contributing to a more inclusive future for everyone.
