New Equipment to Fight Cervical Cancer at the Central Hospital of Maputo
A strategic intervention to strengthen the capacity of the Mozambican health system in the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer.
In Mozambique, between 2022 and 2024, 7,316 new cancer cases were recorded. Cervical cancer ranks first, with 2,017 diagnoses, making it the most common cancer among women in the country.
It is in this context that new medical equipment and supplies have been delivered to the Department of Gynecology at the Central Hospital of Maputo. This initiative aims to enhance the health system’s capacity for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cervical cancer.
The donation, made as part of the project “Prevention of Cervical Cancer in Mozambican Women”, is part of a broader program launched in April 2023. Since then, the initiative has raised awareness among approximately 25,000 people and screened over 6,000 women, using the HPV molecular test as the primary screening method, regardless of HIV status. This approach ensures equity and early diagnosis—key tools for saving lives.
The donated materials—including thermoablation devices, sphygmomanometers, oximeters, speculums, forceps, and gloves—are more than just technical support: they represent a concrete and lasting alliance for the health of Mozambican women, placing prevention and human dignity at the heart of the country’s healthcare and human development.
