The concept of Global Health is becoming increasingly established. We live in a globalized and interdependent world. Strengthening individual healthcare systems is now a top priority on the development agenda for poorer countries, as recognized by the United Nations through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Over the years, DREAM’s work has demonstrated how investments in AIDS care have had a profound impact on healthcare systems. Trained personnel, new infrastructure, service organization, and models of care have contributed to changes in national guidelines and have helped shape a distinctive African organizational model for healthcare delivery—entirely new and adaptable to other diseases. Today, thanks to treatment, people living with HIV achieve a good quality of life and, like everyone else, face other health conditions. The restored lives of many patients raise new questions that cannot be ignored.

DREAM represents a model for combating HIV/AIDS and malnutrition, as well as other infectious diseases and many chronic conditions. Starting from the best diagnostic and therapeutic protocols developed in high-income countries, it has found an appropriate and effective form in the African context. The program is able to make a substantial contribution to the continent—not only through the replication of numerous HIV treatment centers in many African countries, but also as a model for addressing various oncological, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases.

For DREAM, the continuous pursuit of excellence is particularly important, aiming to make the most advanced approaches available—those offered by the developed world—to tackle these diseases and ultimately contribute to freeing Africa from many illnesses. This includes, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic, during which DREAM has been on the front line in prevention and disease management across many countries on the continent.
