Bangui, Central African Republic: A New Device for Free and High-Quality Blood Transfusion Services
Thanks to the support of AICS and in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS), the DREAM Program has successfully installed and provided training on state-of-the-art automated equipment for blood group determination.
As part of the project “RCA: Expansion of Maternal and Child Basic Services at the DREAM Clinic and Strengthening the System for Supplying Safe Blood Bags in Bangui” – AID 12660, funded by the Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (AICS), based in Khartoum with jurisdiction over Eritrea and the CAR, and in partnership with the CNTS, the DREAM Program has made significant advancements. The installation of advanced equipment for precise blood typing has been completed, and specialized training sessions for biologists were conducted. Additionally, the program had the honor of hosting Davide Vecchi, AICS representative for Bangui, at the CNTS, where he witnessed the new equipment in operation.
This innovative and efficient machine is a critical addition to the transfusion center. It transitions blood group determination from a manual, operator-dependent process to an automated system capable of identifying subgroups, thereby reducing the risk of adverse reactions during transfusions.
This decisive step forward strengthens the collaboration between DREAM and CNTS, which began in 2020, to ensure free and high-quality transfusion services.
In the long term, this vital initiative will help the Bangui community gain access to safer healthcare services, particularly for primary care and chronic disease management.
